Bird Pictures from Around Town.

Everyone has seen birds which are beautiful, interesting or curious.  Please eMail us pictures you have taken of these birds and we'll post them here.   Sellersville's Barbara Hufnagle shares a photo of a sheltering chicadee in her backyard.  Solebury's John Covin favors us with several fine pictures of birds near his home(all eating WBU seed!).  Doyletown's Jackie Spicer starts our autumn off nicely with pictures from her backyard of birds at a birdbath.

Other contributors of pictures below include Maryellen Rafferty of Paupak, PA, Angele Switzler of Stockton, Donna Arold of Flemington, Wendy Gladston  of Solebury Mountain,  Helen Diehl of IvylandGerri Dudas, New Hope, Deidre Harbuck, of BethlehemJohn Humphrey, DoylestownCassie Balzer, Telford,  Gretchen Tartakoff, New Hope, Judy McKeon,  Doylestown, JoAnn Smith, Buckingham, Bill Trendler, Forest Grove and Dick Patterson of Doylestown.

Barbara Hufnagle's son, Tim, captured this chicadee on film in her Sellersville backyard.

John Covin has shared several more photos.  Starting clockwise from the right, a downy woodpecker shown enjoying the WBU Finch Blend.  Next, the red coloring of the male house finch is quite impressive and, lastly a portrait of a tufted titmouse behind the berry.

John Covin has shared his backyard birds with us.  Pretty cool to catch the goldfinches squabbling.  The detail of the titmouse on the bottom left is remarkable.  Though male cardinals can be stunning, the subtle coloring of the female is classic.

Jackie Spicer's beautiful backyard has been enhanced with these avian friends.  Clockwise from the right: the Northern Cardinal, Catbird and Blue Jay.

Maryellen Rafferty surprised a small bear cub sampling from our WBU feeder.  Evidently, he didn't mind the company as he continued to eat while Maryellen snapped pictures.

Angele Switzler of Stockton took
these pictures of her new Bluebird
feeder in January.  The cage permits the bluebirds access, but keeps larger birds (next picture) at bay.

Angele has drafted a suet feeder to be a cage for nesting material.  These sparrows
are taking her up on her offer.

Donna Arold's Bed & Breakfast in Flemington plays host to these bluebirds and cardinals.  Must admit a softspot for the cardinal pair as they generally mate for life.

Wendy Gladston really did us a favor by capturing on film a Redpoll atop her Nyjer feeder this January.  It's distinctive red cap worn just above the forehead marks this bird as a Canadian traveler who has come to the States for the winter.  Reasonably sociable, he shares this 8 port feeder with pine siskins.

Helen Diehl sent these slides of
the Blue Bird Family she helped raise last summer (before I mastered the ability to post to our website).  I think they are great.  Jeanne has cleaned out our Blue Bird box and hung our mealworm feeder in the hope of having similar success.

Gerri Dudas of New Hope shows us bluebirds at her feeders earlier this year.  Normally, a bluebird's winter diet consists of wild berries, but they clearly have a taste for our WBU No-Mess Blend.

Going counterclockwise, see 2 bluebirds sharing repast with an inquisitive Pine Sisken.

Directly below is a picture of a nuthatch at a peanut feeder.  Pictures taken by John Kayes.

Taken from near her home by Deidre Harbuck, these photos of (clockwise order) a Redbelly, Pine Warbler and Goldfinch are really top notch.

This image of turkeys sampling a feeder in Telford is sent by Cassie Balzer.

Gretchen  Tartakoff sent us this wonderful picture of bluebirds on a heated birdbath.  Gretchen's other claim to fame is the Chocolate show she hosts in the spring.  More can be found at her website www.buckscountychocolateshow.com

Recent pics by Judy McKeon are the Northern Cardinal and a Red-bellied Woodpecker.

Bill Trendler and his wife put this owlbox on a maple tree 40 feet from the house about 10 years ago.  After 9yrs of squirrel and starling nests, they got their screech owl - who is not shy.

Below are pictures from Bill's feeders.  The grosbeak on the left as well as the Red Belly Woodpecker on the right are both visiting a black oil sunflower feeder.

eMail from our customer Judy ...

Hi Mike and Jeanne, I took this shot in my backyard after this hawk hit our window going after a dove.  I believe this is a immature Northern Goshawk, the white bar above the eye differentiates it from an immature Coopers or Sharped Shinned.  I will send a few more for better views.  This is fun, thanks for posting the backyard birds.  See you soon.  Judy McKeon

Below are pictures from WWW.Rightbird.com of the Northern Goshawk.  It is a large hawk with slate blue-gray to nearly black upperparts and very finely barred and streaked pale gray underparts. Head is dark with thick, white eyebrows and red eyes. Tail is paler gray with three or four dark bands. Sexes are similar, although female is usually larger. Juvenile is browner overall with bright yellow eyes.

Dick Patterson took the pictures below in his Doylestown backyard.  Our
belief is that this is a Sharp-shinned Hawk.  About 9" tall, with square-
cut tailfeathers, it is most easily identified when flying both by its tail
and its quick, snappy wingbeats.

Below are pictures from WWW.Rightbird.com of both the Sharp-shinned and its larger relative, the Cooper's Hawk.  Notice in the pictures below the Cooper's tail is rounded at its edges - in contrast to the square-cut Sharp-shinned's.
